What is Jeuveau?
Jeuveau is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used in adults for a short period of time (temporary) to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines). Jeuveau stops your nerves from telling your facial muscles to flex, temporarily smoothing moderate to severe lines between the brows. However, Jeuveau can cause serious side effects, including allergic reactions, heart or eye problems.
How does Jeuveau work?
When injected, Jeuveau temporarily prevents your nerves from telling your facial muscles to flex. The result? In clinical trials, Jeuveau was shown to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines.
Most people still automatically turn to this compound when they want to smooth away crow’s feet and frown lines, but today, their options are more varied. Similar injectables, like Dysport, Xeomin, and now Jeuveau, allow patients to experiment with multiple neuromodulators. Though all of these products share the same basic mechanism of action, they have some important differences. Knowing the pros and cons of each product can help you achieve the results you want while working within your budget.
Jeuveau and BOTOX are made by different manufacturers and produced in different countries. BOTOX is made by Allergan and manufactured in Ireland, whereas Jeuveau is made by Evolus and produced in South Korea. Jeuveau also uses a slightly different form of botulinum toxin than BOTOX: BOTOX contains onabotulinumtoxinA and Jeuveau contains prabotulinumtoxinA. According to clinical trials, both compounds share a similar safety profile and are equally effective for treating dynamic wrinkles.
Botox is one of the most popular injectable cosmetic treatments on the market. That’s not surprising as it’s been approved by the FDA for cosmetic use since 2002. In 2019, however, a new botulinum toxin for cosmetic use came to life. It’s called Jeuveau (a name with a lot of vowels!) and offers many of the same benefits as Botox. Some people even refer to it as “Newtox.” So, is Jeuveau better than Botox?
How Botox and Jeuveau Work
You won’t notice a major difference between a Botox and Jeuveau treatment. During treatment, one of our expert providers will gently inject the neurotoxin formula into certain facial muscles. The neurotoxin will stop the nerve impulses that cause wrinkles and an aged appearance.
Both Botox and Jeuveau are great options if your primary concern is dynamic wrinkles. These are wrinkles like crow’s feet and frown lines that deepen whenever you express yourself. One of the greatest advantages of these treatments is their rapid onset (within a few days).
Also, several studies have shown that Jeuveau may give longer-lasting results than Botox. Most patients enjoy beautiful results for three to four months. Duration of effect can vary from patient to patient, however, and for some people, Botox lasts longer.
The company behind Jeuveau® is Evolus. They were convinced that they wanted to enter the medical aesthetics industry.
The largest category in this sector is neurotoxins. Wrinkle reduction is the most popular procedure and Allergan has been dominating the market.
It owns 70% of the market share while Dysport has captured 20% and Xeomin only has 10%.
Neurotoxins generate a $1.2 billion revenue on the U.S. alone. With another player in the field, the sales for these companies will drop and there will be a tough competition for the customers.
Understanding Pricing
All of the injectable muscle relaxants like Botox® arrive from the manufacturer as a freeze-dried powder in sterile vials. In order to be able to inject them, they have to be mixed with a liquid. Depending on the intended use, specific amounts of saline solution are added to each vial to produce the desired concentration.
The number of units delivered with each injection determines the degree and duration of results. For example, with Botox® Cosmetic, it takes about 20 units to relax the average woman’s frown muscles adequately for a full three months but using 40 units can produce up to six months of relaxation.
There’s a lot of variation in how many units of neuromodulator each person needs depending on the size and distribution of their muscles. In general, most women will need about 60 to 70 units of Botox to relax the three most commonly treated areas ( foreheads, frown lines, and crow’s feet). Men usually need up 25-50% more units than women for each area because of the larger size & strength of their corresponding facial muscles.
The number of units used with Botox and Jeuveau are essentially the same but Dysport requires about 2.5 units for every unit of Botox or Jeuveau. The price per treatment is usually the same regardless of the medication chosen.
