While melanin provides some natural protection against the sun, it’s not nearly enough to neutralize harmful UV rays that cause premature aging and skin cancer.

Even though UV rays make up only a very small portion of the sun’s rays, they are the main cause of the sun’s damaging effects on the skin. UV rays damage the DNA of skin cells. Skin cancers start when this damage affects the DNA of genes that control skin cell growth.

Skin cancers are one result of getting too much sun, but there are other effects as well. Sunburn and tanning are the short-term results of too much exposure to UV rays and are signs of skin damage. Long-term exposure can cause early skin aging, wrinkles, loss of skin elasticity, dark patches (lentigos, sometimes called age spots or liver spots), and pre-cancerous skin changes (such as dry, scaly, rough patches called actinic keratoses).

Antioxidants are naturally occurring substances that may provide protection against the effects of damaging free radicals on the cells in your body, including your skin. Antioxidant ingredients are already promoted in a number of skin care products available.

Green Tea has become one of the new age food heroes — a helpful ally in preventing everything from heart disease and cancer to skin aging and weight gain. The full range of health benefits may take decades to define, but research on its impact on human skin is reasonably well developed. The secret ingredients are chemicals called catechins, which are antioxidants that can clear cell damage on the skin and repair wrinkles, blemishes or other impurities. When applied to the skin, green tea can reduce sun damage by reducing inflammation and tackling free radicals. (It doesn’t block UV rays.) When choosing a tea, it’s helpful to know that green tea has over five times the amount of catechins as black tea.

Niacinamide
Niacinamide (vitamin B3) is a powerful antioxidant that has shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory and depigmenting properties. It has also shown to improve the texture and tone of the skin, as well as reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. (18)

Vitamin C
Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) is an essential nutrient that can only come from
healthy fruits and vegetables that contain it. Vitamin C is usually touted for its cold-fighting power, but it’s also under study for its impact on preventing and reversing aging skin.

It works in two ways: as an antioxidant, as well as a booster of collagen formation — both of which are important to preserving and maintaining skin’s youthful appearance. (19-21) However, boosting your intake of vitamin C-rich foods does not appear to impact your skin to any measurable degree, so cosmetic companies are hard at work to study whether it can be absorbed through the skin directly via topical creams and lotions.

PREVENT SKIN DAMAGE FROM THE INSIDE OUT

UV rays, infrared radiation, pollution, and lifestyle factors generate damaging free radicals that prematurely age skin. Antioxidants provide advanced environmental protection and are clinically proven to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and promote a naturally even skin tone by neutralizing free radicals.

Skin is the body’s largest organ and one of the most important. In order to achieve optimal skin health, understanding the various skin types and concerns as well as factors that potentially cause the appearance of damage is essential.

The skin is the largest organ of the body with multiple layers, structural proteins, and vital components responsible for its health and appearance. The key to optimal skin improvement is understanding this dynamic organ.

Every skin is different, and the combination of each skin type and particular skin concern presents a unique set of characteristics.

Atmospheric skin aging is caused by a broad and growing range of environmental aggressors on skin, including UV, infrared radiation (IRA), and pollution.

A skin care formulation is only as good as its ingredients. Explore an alphabetical skin care ingredients dictionary featuring key ingredients, their source, and their benefits on skin.

Atmospheric skin aging refers to visible signs of skin aging caused by exposure to atmospheric aggressors. These aggressors include, but are not limited to UVA/UVB, infrared-A (IR-A), and ozone (O3) pollution.

FACING THE FACTS

Atmospheric aggressors surround us on a daily basis, posing a constant threat to healthy-looking skin, because they induce free radical formation that may damage cells.

What is vitamin C? Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is probably the best-known vitamin. It is most often associated with citrus fruit and is known for its ability to boost the immune system, increasing the body’s resistance to infections like cold and flu in winter. But what many people don’t know is that vitamin C is an antioxidant that performs a variety of roles in the body. It helps to promote healthy gum and teeth, aids in mineral absorption, and helps heal wounds.
What vitamin C does for you?
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that reacts with free radicals. Through this mechanism, the vitamin protects the body from the onslaught of cancer and other diseases of lifestyle. The vitamin plays an important role in the formation of connective tissue, cartilage, bone matrix, tooth dentin, skin and tendons – making it one of the cornerstones of the wound healing process. Vitamin C is best known for its mechanism of increasing the body’s resistance to infection. It also helps to keep the mucous membranes intact.
I’m Fabulous Cosmetics Vitamin C serum is a stable form of L-Ascorbic Acid. Since the amount of Vitamin C that penetrates into your skin is directly correlated with the acidity of the C, we have set ours appropriately low (2.5pH). You will find that our C Serum will deliver the maximum amount of vitamin into the skin with just a slight amount of irritation/tingling. Our serum will help to protect your skin from UVA & UVB rays damaging effects.
*Ultraviolet light exposure depletes up to two-thirds of your skin’s Vitamin C stores. These levels cannot be re-obtained by ingestion of Vitamin C! They can only be reached by a topical application. Topical Vitamin C provides more than twenty times the amount of Vitamin C found in normal skin, so extremely high percentages are quite wasteful and will not be absorbed and utilized.

The sooner you start taking care of your skin the better! By the time you see changes you don’t like in your skin, a lot of damage has already been done.

The best way to slow the aging of many things in the human body, on a cellular level, is to keep body cells from oxidizing. And the best way to keep your body from needlessly oxidizing, experts say, is to avoid smoking and to eat a diet rich in antioxidants.

As we get older, our top skin priority becomes preventing wrinkles — and the No. 1 way to do this, of course, is NOT to tan.

Nearly every fruit (and many veggies) have antioxidants, vitamins, and other properties (like fruit acids) that are great for every skin type. In fact, when I started this blog, I began by trying to isolate different fruits and which types of skin they’d work best on.

You know what I found? Nearly every fruit is great for any skin type. Nearly all of them help treat acne. Nearly all of them help rid the skin of dead cells, which makes them great for dry skin. Nearly every one enhances complexion. And SO many of them, with time, help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and age spots.

Some of my favorite fruits/veggies to put on your face, just as they are, with nothing added:

  • Citrus: Lemon, orange, lime, tangerines – you can use the flesh/juice itself, or just rub the rinds on your face. Either way, don’t leave citrus on for more than 10-15 minutes. Also, it can cause photosensitivity (and lightening of the skin), so be wary of spending much time in the sun for a few hours after you’ve done this. Best for: Acneic and oily skin, as well as any skin with a lot of built-up dead skin cells. Be careful with broken skin, though.
  • Berries: Strawberries (great for any skin type, but especially acne), cranberry, grape (great for aging skin).
  • Fruits: Apples, mangoes, kiwi (especially!), papaya, banana, tomato (great for acne), pomegranate, pear.
  • Melons: Cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon (great for dry skin and age spots).
  • Veggies: Eggplant (great for moles, as it’s anti-cancer), avocado (for dry and aging skin), pumpkin, potato (fabulous for acne and oily skin), lettuce, cucumber (for sensitive and dry skin), onions (for acne and oily skin).

Using the good Vitamin C serum every day is also a must!

The application of herbs and oils to the skin is a major route for the administration of plant medicine. Taking action on Vata dosha thus having a stabilizing effect on the nervous system and enhancing Ojas, the subtle essence of all the tissues. There’s so much more going on when we use botanicals in our skincare. A calm body and mind manifest beautiful healthy skin.

Color by nature no adulteration necessary. This formula is high in sesquiterpenes, monoterpenes, bisabolol. This means scientifically these botanicals take action on the liver and are highly anti-inflammatory. The liver is a major component when it comes to the maintenance of our bodily system this is paramount in establishing beautiful balanced skin.

Combating inflammation is a major component of an overall balance of our minds and body. Botanicals=Health. What we are searching for is balanced skin, because when we attain this we know all is well on the inside and this is where real beauty resides.

Essential oils, aromatic waters and other natural substances are well suited for skincare, but a realistic outlook must be maintained toward the regeneration and rejuvenation of the skin. It is possible though to have a positive influence on stress-related skin problems in a relatively short period of time if genuine and authentic essential oils are used. While normal cosmetics treatment is symptom-orientated and attempts to change the skin in one way or another, the goal of essential oil treatment is always the restoration of balance. Treatment with essential oils attempts to bring about metabolic functions back into balance. It is not the purpose of holistic essential oil cosmetics to encourage the expectation of miracles as promised by mainstream cosmetic industry.

Renew serum is loaded with Caffeine, Hyaluronic acid, blue tansy oil.  Caffeine constricts blood vessels to reduce redness. This makes it an ideal treatment for facial flushing and Rosaceae. When applied topically, caffeine works as a diuretic, aids in circulation and is also a powerful antioxidant.
