Puffy eyes can have causes that aren’t due to underlying disease. Examples include aging, hereditary differences, allergies, fluid retention from large salt intake, trauma, or lack of sleep.

With aging, the tissues around your eyes, including some of the muscles supporting your eyelids, weaken.

Fat tends to migrate southward, into the area under your eye, with age, because years of gravity mean that the muscles and collagen around it are weaker and less likely to hold it in place. Once there, it can be targeted by fluid that swells its cells; fatty tissue tends to be pretty vulnerable to swelling like that.

Other factors can contribute to under-eye bags, including:

  • Not getting enough sleep
  • Smoking tobacco
  • Allergies
  • Retaining fluid (often after waking up, or after eating salty food)
  • Inheriting this condition (it can run in families).

While having bags or shadows under your eyes may not look especially attractive, it is usually harmless. However, if swelling of the eye area is painful, itchy, red or does not go away, see your ophthalmologist.

Also, The water retention under the eyes is also known as lymphatic fluid. It’s a product of the body’s lymphatic system, which drains off toxins and transports lymphatic fluid (a combination of water and white blood cells) around the body to fight off infection. This liquid is what ends up pooled under the eyes in the fat cells, and there are certain things that seem to exacerbate it.

Dark Circles Are Caused By Thin Skin And Heredity

The circles of dark skin beneath our eyes that seem to signal. Darkness under the eyes develops because of the increasing thinness of the skin there as we age; the older we get, the more it thins, and the more dark blood vessels underneath become visible. Why does it thin? Same reason fat migrates out of the eye socket: our body loses its ability to hold things up, and it sags. It’s already one of the thinnest parts of skin on the body.

Heredity, however, also plays a huge role in the development of dark eye circles. It’s called genetic hyper-pigmentation, and it means that some people simply inherit darker skin around their eyes from their parents and grandparents.

Can I improve the appearance of my under-eye bag?

There are strategies to help improve the appearance of under-eye bags. If someone has slight fat prolapse pushing forward, and has a certain anatomy of the bone structure under the eyes where there is space in the tear trough, fillers such as a hyaluronic acid filler in the Restylane or Juvederm family can be used to blend the transition between the elevation of the fat pocket and the hollow of the tear trough.  Fillers of choice for this area are either Restylane Refyne for someone who needs a lot of volume, or Belotero.

Darkness caused by the excess brown pigment (melanin) can be faded with topical products or in-office chemical peels. Kojic acid and vitamin C are on the gentler end of the spectrum, lightening pigment gradually. Matrixyl 3000, matrikines anti-wrinkle complex which helps: – reverse the chronological aging as attested by the regulation of senescence markers. Aging skin tends to behave like young skin. – reduce the cutaneous photodamage by restructuring the fragile network of the papillary dermis.

Palmitoyl Triepeptide-3, this peptide, consisting of three amino acids, promotes collagen synthesis by mimicking the skin’s natural processes. It is seen as an alternative to a collagen injection as it boosts the connective tissue growth factor necessary to produce collagen. Clinical studies have shown it can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and improve the skin’s firmness and moisture level.

Stress and huge lifestyle changes all play a part in preventing getting a good night’s sleep, and when you’re knackered the first place it shows is your face.

The skin under our eyes behaves a little differently to the skin elsewhere on our face – it’s naturally thinner and more fragile. So! This means it’s normally the first area of the face to show signs of tiredness and visible fine lines which is why we get darker circles around this delicate area.

The eye area is not great at keeping itself hydrated as there are fewer oil glands around the eyes.

COMMON CAUSES

Dark circles under the eyes can have causes that aren’t due to underlying disease. Examples include family history of dark circles, exhaustion, lack of sleep, allergies, eye rubbing, or excessive sun exposure.

Dark circles under the lower eyelids are common in men and women. Often accompanied by bags, dark circles can make you appear older than you are. To make matters worse, they can be difficult to get rid of.

Though they can affect anyone, dark circles are most common in people who:

  • are elderly
  • have a genetic predisposition to this condition (periorbital hyperpigmentationTrusted Source)
  • are from non-white ethnic groups (darker skin tones are more prone to hyperpigmentation around the eye area)

While fatigue may seem like the most logical explanation for this condition, there are a number of factors that can contribute to dark circles under the eyes. In most cases, they are no cause for concern and do not require medical attention. Read on to learn more.

Treatment

At-Home treatments

Treatment for dark eye circles depends on the underlying cause. However, there are some home remedies that can help manage this condition. Some of the more common methods include:

  • Apply a cold compress. A cold compress can help reduce swelling and shrink dilated blood vessels. This can reduce the appearance of puffiness and help eliminate dark circles. Wrap a few ice cubes in a clean washcloth and apply it to your eyes. You can also dampen a washcloth with cold water and apply it to the skin under your eyes for 30 minutes for the same effect. Repeat this process if the cloth becomes warm or if the ice melts.
  • Get extra sleep. Catching up on sleep can also help reduce the appearance of dark circles. Sleep deprivation can cause your skin to appear pale, making the dark circles more obvious. Allow yourself seven to eight hours of rest to prevent dark circles from appearing.
  • Elevate your head. While sleep deprivation can play a part in producing those dark bags under your eyes, sometimes it’s how you sleep. Elevate your head with a few pillows to prevent fluid from pooling under your eyes which can make them look puffy and swollen.
  • Soak with tea bags. Applying cold tea bags to your eyes can improve their appearance. Tea contains caffeine and antioxidants that can help stimulate blood circulation, shrink your blood vessels, and reduce liquid retention beneath your skin. Soak two black or green tea bags in hot water for five minutes. Let them chill in the refrigerator for 15 to 20 minutes. Once they’re cold, apply the tea bags to your closed eyes for 10 to 20 minutes. After removing, rinse your eyes with cool water.
  • Conceal with makeup. While makeup and cosmetics do not cure dark eye circles, they can help to camouflage them. Concealers can cover dark marks so they blend in with your normal skin color. However, as with any topical treatment or makeup product, use proper care. Some products can cause your symptoms to worsen and may trigger an allergic reaction. If you begin to experience irregular symptoms from any topical treatment, stop use immediately and schedule a visit with your doctor.

Dark circles under the eyes are a common complaint of both men and women, although they can occasionally be seen in children. As people age, the skin becomes thinner and collagen is lost, sometimes enhancing the appearance of blood vessels beneath the eyes and making the area appear darker.
Sometimes an iron deficiency can cause dark undereye circles. Because iron carries oxygen, alack of it can mean that the cells don’t get enough oxygen. This can give the cells under your eyes a dark appearance. Also, irondeficiency anemia can make your skin look pale and ashy.
Also, insomnia or simply a late night can cause circles under your eyes to appear or become more prominent. This happens because lack of sleep tends to cause the blood vessels under the thin skin of the eyes to dilate, creating a dark tint.
In a primary cause, the increased pigmentation is found under both eyes and occurs spontaneously. In a secondary cause, the increased pigmentation is caused by a systemic or localized process. Dark circles under your eyes may also be triggered from the oxidation of blood leaking from the blood vessels around the eyes.
